Nia Viese d’Kurbyss

Overview

Nia Viese d’Kurbyss, or unaffectionately referred to as ‘the Mistress’ is a Parladisilian renegade who fled prosecution to Nythayn where she became infamous during her ascension to a Sage by kidnapping the daughter of the current Emperor of Nythayn. She now rules over the domain of Kurbyss—a large region that is currently a part of Nythayn in spite of its historic disputes. As of this day, she is the ruler of this once disputed and wartorn region as a Sage who has the same authority as a Duke.

Due to the circumstances of Nia’s rise to power as well as her particular field of magical expertise, she is either dispised or feared by most. In addition, many Nobles have a growing disdain towards her due the political instability she is indirectly and directly causing. However, she has gained a non-insignificant popularity and support amongst Commoners due to her disinterst in actually governing her domain, thus it is not uncommon to see Commoners from Vharnyst in particular to migrate to her domain.

As of today, Nia is known far and wide for her influence as a ‘wild card’ in spite of her current inactivity. Her presence had effectively brought the wars between Parladisal and Nythayn to an indefinite halt—a feat she has achived through taboo, yet very powerful means. The deal she struck with the Emperor of Nythayn, combined with her overwhelming influence in the region, led to the establishment of Kurbyss as a territory of Nythayn—and, by extension, as a possession of Nia through the noble title granted to her under their agreement. To some unexpected surprise, she pays taxes.

Magical Talent

Nia is a Wizard who specializes in taboo schools of Magic such as Chronomancy and Necromancy. However, her use of magic does extend to other schools of Magic as well—albiet less elegently so. She is known particularly for her brutish use of Magic in schools where she does not specialize in, which is something that has been exasperated by her immeasurable amount of Mana that even she struggles to control at times.

Part of her infamy comes from her brutish attempts at replicating the creation of life, one that the Vampiric Sage demonstrated with the creation of the Draconian Sage. This brutish approach to the creation of life has led her faithful, yet mindless and unstable Acolytes. The biggest and most powerful of these Acolytes she had created was one nicknamed ‘the Blasphemy’, a giant Acolyte made in the twisted image of the Goddess Lífþrasir.

History

Early Life (4684 AT – 4695 AT)

Nia was born in 4684 AT to the Viese family in Louisa, Parladisal—a family with a closely kept secret. Having born with a rare affinity towards nearly every school of Magic, as well as a larger than normal supply of Mana to back it up, Nia was quickly enrolled into an academy to nurture her rare gift. Eventually she had found success early by demonstrating exceptional understanding and control over her Chronomancy for her age, thus through the recommendation of her lecturers she was granted opportunities few her age could dream of.

Academic Life (4696 AT – 4701 AT)

Following the recommendations of her lecturers, she would be enrolled into a prestigious academy by the name of ‘Magic Acadamia of Saint Katherine’ in 4696. This place would also be the academy where she met her future ex-fiancé—Tanhûser von Louisa.

During her time in the academy Nia would slowly begin developing disinterest in the studies as a result of her parent’s expectations of her. Nia’s academic performance would remain tolerable, but she would not put any effort into exceling. However, during her second year in the academy things would change somewhat for Nia. Second year is the first year where lectures for Chronomancy would be available. Given her rare affinity for it, she found the motivation to join the lectures for it as it would grant her opportunities available to few for seemingly no extra effort in her eyes. Given individuals with an affinity towards Chronomancy were far and few, the lecture had very few students in it, which allowed her lecturer to take increased individual interest in his students—he found Nia in particular to be worthy of his attention as a result of her potential in spite of her seeming disinterest. Her lecturer, Albrecht von Louisa, would finally succeed in what the other lecturers and her parents would fail to do, help Nia find fulfillment and care in her academic life.

Sometime near the end of her second year in the Academy, Albrecht would introduce Nia to another young prodigy—his own son, Tanhûser von Louisa. For rest of the second and third year, the two would develop a friendly rivalry.

By the end of her 3rd year in the academy, Nia had received 3rd Class Certification in Magic, a non-specific certification. Given her performance in her 3rd Class years, Albrecht would recommend that Nia should go for 2nd Class Certificate. Learning that 2nd Class Certificates allow specialization in a singular school of Magic, she took Albrecht’s advice and took Chronomancy as her sole focus. To her dismay however, Tanhûser would continue onto a different academy for future knights instead.

After two more years in the academy, Nia would get her 2nd Class Certification in Chronomancy under Albrecht’s care at the age of 17 in 4701 AT—one of the youngest people to earn a 2nd Class Certificate. Here she would also learn that 1st Class Certification in Chronomancy is earned differently compared to other schools of Magic. It turned out that the known information regarding Chronomancy is limited relative to other schools of Magic, thus there isn’t anything else to for the lecturers to teach in a potential 1st Class Certificate lectures. She had learned everything Albrecht knew—including the breakthroughs that granted him his 1st Class Certificate in Chronomancy. This would lead her to find a new goal, gaining a 1st Class Certificate in Chronomany herself just like Albrecht have through the only possible way—making a breakthrough.

1st Class Certification (4702 AT – 4704 AT)

Over the next three years after her 2nd Class Certification she had been working alongside Albrecht as an assistent lecturer alongside her own personal research. At last in 4704 AT she would hit her first breakthrough in her research that would earn her 1st Class Certification in Chronomancy. Her research would eventually culminate in a teleportation spell that doesn’t require the use of pristine Magic Runes that serve as waystones located in multiple locations, effectively eliminating the need for material components of this process completely–which has reduced to components to somatic only. Although her research was deemed too dangerous to be used in any practical application currently, it was still a breakthrough nonetheless, thus she was granted a 1st Class Certification in Chronomancy at last.

Rise and Fall (4705 AT)

Reunion and Military Service

At the beginning of the year, Nia would finally meet Tanhûser again. After catching up, Nia would learn that Tanhûser Having completed his academic pursuits, he planned to join the Custodians of Louisa in order to perhaps one day assume his uncle’s mantle as the head of the Custodians of Louisa in Louisa. To her surprise, Tanhûser was rejected from pledging an oath. Nia, to her family’s dismay would join the Custodians of Louisa to serve beside Tanhûser so that their brief meeting would not be a brief one.

Nia and Tanhûser would become renowned within the province of Louisa. The two young prodigies rose quickly through couple ranks, thanks not only to their talent but also to the influence of Tanhûser’s family. The two would eventually get engaged as a result of them growing closer during their time together.

The Viese Family’s Prosecution

Shortly after Nia and Tanhûser’s engagement, she would make a grave mistake that led to the prosecution and eventual execution of her entire family. Having grown notably rebellious agaisnt her family, she would reveal her family’s secret to Tanhûser–her family’s affinity towards Necromancy. Nia’s trust in Tanhûser was immediately shattered. A devoutly religious man, Tanhûser scorned her and, behind her back, exposed her family’s affinity for Necromancy to his family. By the time she learned what had happened her family would already be publicly executed and Nia herself would be detained within a cell designed specifically for those with magical talent given her education. Here her access to all three spell components would be rendered inaccessible.

In spite of all this however, Tanhûser who still loved Nia would offer her an olive branch–an opportunity to cleanse herself willingly by surrendering her ability to use Magic permanently. But the pain of her family’s death had driven her inconsolable. Tanhûser, having his offer be rejected would instead order her execution himself, but unlike her family she would be granted dignitiy to be executed out of public eye. And once they came back to her on the date of her execution, she was missing.

Albrecht, someone who had closely worked with Nia would offer help investigating Nia’s disappearance. After the inspection of her cell, they found no signs of breakout, and her lack of access to spell components was maintained. The circumstances of the escape left Albrecht with only one possible theory. Nia used her experimental teleportation Magic on herself, except this time without any spell components somehow. The volatile nature of the Magic she had used to escape left her captors puzzled on what to do–they had no way of knowing whether she survived her own spell, especially since removing yet another spell component likely made it even more unstable than it already is.

Brief Meeting (4708 AT)

Briefly in 4708 AT she would be found in the Forbidden Archive in Vhladnyr by the Draconian Sage, Dhreyko. A grave mistake that Dhreyko would live to regret would be committed here. The Draconian Sage initially intended to kill her on the spot, believing she was strong enough to pose a threat. However, he chose to spare her, deeming it a waste of time—he saw little will to live in her eyes. Having squandered the opportunity, Nia made her escape with a couple of stolen tomes using her teleportation spell. In the years that followed, the Draconian Sage would often wonder if he had made a mistake, especially after witnessing her use a spell he hadn’t thought possible.

Ascension (4713 AT)

In 4713 AT, Nia ascended into a Sage, proclaiming her ascension by abducting the Princess Imperial of Nythayn with the aid of a Phantom Rogue. In addition to the abduction, she halted the war between Parladisal and Nythayn with her artifical army of Acolytes. The Draconian Sage upon meeting her recognized Nia’s face, and in that moment he realized the grave mistake he had made in sparing her all those years ago. The Draconian Sage advised the Emperor to comply with Nia’s demands, as they were not difficult to meet and could even prove beneficial. Though begrudging, the Emperor agreed to the demands and ensured his daughter’s safe return. As for the demands, Nia gained control of a disputed territory between Parladisal and Nythayn, establishing it as her domain under the Empire of Nythayn. By extension, she held the same authority as a Duke within the Empire. The Emperor and the Draconian Sage foresaw much political mayhem but saw the presence of a Sage between Parladisal and the rest of Nythayn as beneficial–they both deemed the continued halting of the war to be a worth the trouble she put them through.

On the other side of the once-ongoing war, Parladisal was forced to retreat. The sudden appearance of blackened monsters would prompted Parladisal’s forces to reassess the situation. They would later learn that these beings are referred to as ‘Acolytes’, creations by a face too familiar. The missing daughter of the Viese family’s whereabouts would be clear as day to Tanhûser and Albrecht.

Alliance With the Heir of Vharnyst (4721 AT)

In 4721 AT, the beginning of a concord with Kyht d’Vharnyst would be agreed upon, granting him significant control over the domain of Kurbyss in exchange for a half-Elf child Nia saw much promise in. She named the half-Elf Fauna, whose education would be facilitated by Kyht d’Vharnyst. The concord in question would entail the following below.
